A Flint native who served in the U.S. Navy and in federal law enforcement and who doesn’t appear to have any previous electoral experience announced on July 14 he is running as a Republican to challenge first-term U.S. Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet of Bay City, saying Democratic representation has contributed to the region’s decline.

“Where I’m from, we’re raised to think Democrats are the good guys,” Amir Hassan says in a 2-minute-long video posted on social media platform X as he walks past scenes of graffiti-covered structures, collapsed front porches and boarded-up commercial centers. “We’ve been held culturally hostage for over half a century. But look around. Flint is what happens when your vote is taken for granted.”
